Is Cloud computing the mainframes close cousin?

From George, the Meccano robot, to his project to recreate the code-cracker Colossus, and founding of the National Museum of Computing, Tony Sale, who sadly died yesterday, can be viewed as the embodiment of the computing age. Looking back at Tony’s career and the extroadinary advancements in technology over recent decades I wonder whether we have gone full circle. I ask myself, is Cloud Computing a close cousin of the mainframe?
